WHAM: Wound Healing Awareness Month

The American Board of Wound Management Foundation has named June as Wound Healing Awareness Month (WHAM!). This month is meant to recognize the challenges experienced by individuals whose lives are affected daily by chronic wounds and to bring awareness to the general public of the support given by certified wound specialists.

According to the U.S National Institute of Health, nearly 6.5 million people are currently suffering from what is known as the 'silent killer', or chronic wounds. This means that one to two percent of the population in developed countries are predicted to experience a chronic wound at some point in their lifetime. However, other underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, obesity, smoking, and some medications make some even more susceptible to developing chronic wounds. Those with a wound or multiple wounds are highly encouraged to seek medical treatment right away, as the risk of infection or other serious complications increase if left untreated. Consulting a Wound Care Specialist will give the patient the best treatment options to move forward in their healing process.
