Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes can lead to serious foot conditions including foot infections and foot ulcers, but diabetic foot complications can be prevented with good foot care and regular foot exams. It is recommended for those with diabetes to:

  1. Inspect your feet daily. If unable to see the bottom of your feet, purchase a telescoping mirror or have a family member or friend inspect them for you.

  2. Generally recommended that diabetics do not soak their feet in water due to not being able to feel how hot the water due to of lack of sensation in their feet.

  3. Wear clean, dry socks. Consider wearing socks made for diabetics.

  4. Never go barefoot.

  5. Dry feet and between toes well after bathing.

  6. Wear properly fitting shoes.  Ask your podiatrist or foot care specialist about diabetic shoes. Iinsurance may cover some or all of the cost for a pair of diabetic shoes.

  7. Get foot exams regularly.
